164 Ballet Pointe Shoes Make for an Artful Installation

Creative repurposing and artfully reimaged projects continue to inspire us. And the “Ballet Shoe Project” is yet another story that caught our attention.

Over the years the Cary Ballet Conservatory in Cary, North Carolina, had accumulated quite a collection of ballet shoes that had never been worn, but because of their age weren’t usable by dancers. Twenty nine artists collected the 164 retired shoes and set about decorating them for what will become the 18’ x 13 ½’ permanent installation in the Conservatory’s glass atrium.

All of this just in time for National Dance Day on July 27th, when the display will open to the public.
